Getting to know you: Graham Watson, Managing Director, Advanced Engagement

Where did your passion for digital come from?

In the late nineties, there was an explosion in the number of websites which piqued my interest. In 2000-2001 I did a Masters Degree in Interactive Multimedia which included elements of Human-Computer Interaction and Usability Engineering and while I moved away from that sphere for a few years it couldn’t be more relevant to what I do now.

What’s your favourite thing about the industry?

Where do you see yourself/your company in five years? Hopefully serving many more clients, in innovative ways, to reduce the security risks to their organisation posed by the way people go about their work.

Why did you join ScotlandIS and importantly, why are you still with us?

We joined after accessing a report by ScotlandIS on procurement in the public sector which is very relevant to Advanced Engagement. ScotlandIS is great for networking, a few other members reached out to find out what we do as soon as we joined.

What do you consider to be the biggest benefit of your ScotlandIS membership?

If you could give one piece of advice to an emerging business/startup, what would it be? Find out as fast as you can how you can accelerate every part of the business. Quite often this can mean outsourcing tasks that you could do but are either more quickly or cheaply achieved by someone else while you focus on more valuable tasks.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

Changing people’s view of Cyber Security’s relevance to them and also the perception of Security Professionals as the people who like to say “No”.
